
Fort Boyard
After the English briefly took possession of the Ile d'Aix in 1757, and in order to protect newly armed naval vessels coming out of the Grand Arsenal, Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the construction of Fort Boyard in 1804. Constructed upon a sand bank, which needless to say created many difficulties, the fort was completed in 1857, by which time modern weaponry had rendered it obsolete. The fort has finally found its place as the home of the in summertime. |
