The Citadel

Oyster farming

Two structures comprise the Château d'Oléron, the citadel, which was built with the military objective of defending the peninsula and the town where the population lived, and still lives.

Situated at the south-western point of the island, the citadel was constructed on the ruins of a medieval castle destroyed in 1621. Major improvements were carried out by Vauban towards the end of the 17th century. The slowness of progress and the cost of successive reconstructions forced the population to displace totally three times in three years

A walk around the site by night is a magical experience, the walls having recently been improved with marvellous illuminations.
